Have you ever considered offering peanuts to the birds that visit your backyard? If not, you might give it some thought. Peanuts are extremely high in protein, oil and fat and are enjoyed by many birds all year long. Put up a peanut feeder and the woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, jays and siskins will love you.
The simplest peanut feeder is a tube constructed of a small wire mesh (about 1/4"). You simply buy peanuts out of the shell and pour them into the feeder. The mesh holds the peanuts in the feeder while giving the birds plenty of room to peck through and break them into smaller bits. There are also feeders that will hold whole, in-shell, peanuts. These whole peanut feeders will work for jays and woodpeckers while the mesh feeders will work for all the birds mentioned above.
So, if you're looking for something new to offer the birds visiting your yard, considering putting out some peanuts. The birds will thank you.
