We have at least a few Downy Woodpeckers who are regular visitors to the feeders on our deck. I like having them around so I brought home a Downy Nesting Box and finally put it up last weekend. I had read somewhere that you can pack a woodpecker box with wood chips in order to let them go through the process of creating their own "cavity". We packed our box fairly well and installed it up in a tree with high hopes. I glanced at it with the binoculars a few days ago and thought that it looked like some chips had been removed. Yesterday, I noticed a small pile of chips around the base of the tree. It may be too much to ask for a Downy to find our nesting box within the first few days. But, it looks like that might have happened so we are keeping our fingers crossed.
