It was raining when I arrived but blue skies by the time we left.
Nov 10, 2007 About 7:45am to 8:45am Temp about 49F Rain Showers & Sun
I stood looking out over our backyard around 7:20a this morning. The weather looked pretty good and there was a lot of bird activity. Within a minute or so I saw Juncos, Spotted Towhees, California Quail, Crows, Pileated Woodpecker, Northern Flicker and sparrows. My guess was that yesterdays wind kept them down all day and they were making up for it by feeding aggressively today. I then thought that the same thing may be happening at Fish Park and that I had better get over there and see what was moving about.
I left the house in decent weather but soon drove into a rain shower. The weather was improving by the time I arrived at the park but there was still a little bit of a drizzle. I entered the park slowly listening carefully in an effort to predict how active the birds would be. I could hear some calls but not as many as I had hoped for. However, by the time I walked to the far corner, I could hear quite a few birds in the brush along the creek. I had stopped to take a photo when I heard a noise behind me and turned to find that Nancy and Lili had also arrived.
We walked down to the far platform over the creek and had all sorts of chickadees and kinglets around us. The chickadees seemed to be furiously feeding among the bark and moss of the trees. Most of the birds seemd to be on the water so we walked from platform to platform before having to head out for coffee at Central Market.
Here is what we saw & heard on Nov 10, 2007...
Seen: Song Sparrow Black-capped Chickadee Ruby-crowned Kinglet Golden-crowned Kinglet Mallard Green-winged Teal Double-crested Cormorant Northern Flicker Great Blue Heron American Crow Common Merganser Gulls I can't ID Bufflehead (I think. It was far off and I couldn't get a great view with my 8x binos.) A shorebird that has me stumped. My first two thoughts are birds that would be fairly rare for this time of year. F Fortunately, My friend Jon is coming over and hopefully he can provide an ID if the birds are still there tommorrow. Salmon
