I have a new spotting scope, tripod and digital camera mount so I thought I would take it all over to Fish Park and see what this digiscoping thing is all about. I can tell you right now... it is not as easy as you might think. It is not simply pointing your scope/camera at a bird and pressing the shutter button. I will keep trying but now realize that it is going to take a bit of practice before I start producing decent photos.
Even after just one morning I have learned a few things. Following are the few photos that were closest to being in focus and my lessons learned.
1. My eyesight is horrible. 2. Horrible eyesight makes it difficult to get the scope focused well enough for a decent photo. 3. There is not enough light at 9:00am on a Kitsap January morning for the colors and details to stand out. 4. It can be extremely difficult to get the scope on the bird when you are viewing the image on the camera's LCD. 5. Once the scope is on the bird... the bird moves. 6. The LCD on my old camera is too small. A newer model with a larger screen would help a lot. 7. Don't drop the camera & mount on a cement floor. It tends to damage then a bit.
These photos are pretty bad but at least you can see enough of the birds to identify them.
