Today was another good day at Poulsbo's Fish Park. Once again the weather was better then I had hoped for and the birds were very active and vocal. Usually I don't see anything interesting until I hit the back end of the park and start working my way forward. This morning Nancy and I had crossed the bridge over the creek and were walking along near where the amphitheater will eventually go. I had noticed something in a stand of saplings but had written it off as a leaf and didn't even bother to give it a look through the binoculars. Nancy however did glance at it and saw that it was actually a Goldfinch (a first for our Fish Park list) and that it was well on its way to having its breeding plumage.
We continued on to the back of the park where I always see Song Sparrows, Chickadees and Kinglets. While scanning the visable birds we heard a woodpecker drumming a short distance away. I made a quick survey of the trees but didn't see anything. The bird drummed some more so I moved down the trail in order to change my angle and started looking at a tree immediately behind where I previously looked. I had a bit of luck and looked at just the right place at just the right time and caught a quick view of what I think was a Red-breasted Sapsucker. I tried to get the scope on him but branches were in the way and the bird must have moved. I tried to find him again with my binoculars but he had moved on and had stopped drumming.
Here is our list from this morning...
